This is indeed intended.
Another advantage of not using switch points for road traffic.

The downside is that vehicles will "cut the corner", which may be realistic if there's nothing else there, but otherwise it might be better to move the ends of the roads closer to the junction. With single track roads it's less important.

Or use single tracks as the junctions on the side road.
