As I add detail to my layout I am noticing a significant drop in smoothness and performance (50% fps reduction) of the simulation when the mouse is over the MBS window.

Hi Trevor,

please attach your layout where I can test the behavior. Mouse picking is not for free, but at technical side, it does not depend on the object count.

Kind regards,

Neo

Here you go...

It could of course be my system or graphics card.. but I figured I'd point it out anyway.

With mine it goes from about 35fps with the mouse over here to under 20fps with the mouse resting in that window, and the moving objects hesitate pretty badly.

I realize mouse picking would affect it, but just resting over it?

Anyhow.

Hi Trevor,

thank you for your layout. The fps drop is normal behavior:

Mouse picking has to be performed every frame because of moving objects.

The performance of mouse picking depends on your "scene depth". The more objects overlap, the more objects have to be checked in order to find the one right under the mouse. This step is already heavily optimized, but it is never for free.

Kind regards,

Neo

I can't imagine why you would do that if no buttons are pressed though.... but it is what it is I guess.

that's a lot of performance loss just to upgrade this.... and if the mouse doesn't move.... why bother?

Hi Trevor,

there are other mouse sensitive elements in 3D Train Studio beside the status bar, like the targets for the crane simulation. Disabling mouse picking is not an option, but the application will benefit from other future performance improvements, so that fps drops due to mouse picking will not have that big impact anymore.

Kind regards,

Neo

Maybe so, but putting it to sleep if you see no mouse movement or clicking after 2 or 3 seconds seems prudent.

But I know you are already swamped so I will shut up now ;)

Good to know it's not my system though .

Hmm, yes I am using multiple monitors with a lot of windows open too, so degradation may be worse on my system.
