As I've noted in a couple of other post, I recently purchased a gaming computer to replace my 10+ year old All-In-One computer ... since I was only experiencing 6 FPS on my busy layout.

To my surprise my frame rate only increased to 16 . I would be delighted to have 30-35.

Using monitor programs, with 3DM running my CPU and GPU are only at 10-15% capacity.

Setting graphics to low and/or off in both 3DM and Nvidia software does not change the FPS only the graphics quality.

Less "busy" layouts provided thru 3DM max out at 50 ... only larger more graphics intensive layouts seem to be affected.

Any thoughts ....

Hi,

what graphics card is listed in your graphics settings of 3D Train Studio? It seems that you are not using your NVIDIA card, but instead you internal card.

Kind regards,

Neo

Neo, thanks for the quick response !

The Nvidia 4060 Ti card  Direct X 11 level 11, is listed under graphics of 3D Train Studio.

Provided some screen shots of settings ...

Am I missing something ????

@hmclay I would recommend, that you change the following settings:

Image Scaling to "Off"

Antialiasing - Transparency to "Off"

Background Application Max Frame Rate to "Off"

Use the global settings tab if those options are deactivated in the indivdual program settings.

You also seem to use a 60Hz refresh rate. Your display (Asus  VA329HE) should support 75Hz at Full-HD. Try changing the setting accordingly in this location:

alexander42 ... thanks for the suggestions. Downloaded latest monitor drivers , changed suggested options however ....  still at 13-16 FPS.

Don't have a clue what is going on but still enjoying the program as is.

Thanks again !

Still, these are very low fps figures. If you want to investigate this further: Try determening, whether this is an MBS problem or a computer problem first.

Run this graphics benchmark on standard settings: https://benchmark.unigine.com/heaven  Make sure to reset all Nvidia settings to factory values first. You may want to run this multiple times. This will give you a performance value to compare against other systems.

Please post the CID of an MBS layout with low fps here. I will check this layout on my computer.

Ran the program you suggested. Hit restore from NVIDIA Control panel, nothing else.

FPS 352

Score 8870

Min 12

Max 713

My monitor is connected via  HDMI wireless , don't know if it has any affect.

Running programs supplied by MBS i.e. "Recent Layouts" , I run 60 FPS (Monitor Speed)

The one that runs slow is my current layout. Cannot publish because of sound files. It is very animated.

Your benchmark score is actually quite good. As a reference: These are the results on my machine. My CPU is quite old and is probably limiting the max fps values, but my gpu is comparable to yours.

 Screenshot_6.jpg.ef9a216d32fa85db905c9030c32883c6.jpg

Even with these scores, basic MBS layouts run at 100+ fps with 4K resolution on my machine. However, there are very complex layouts that drag down the fps below 20. Layout complexity and performance requirements rise quickly, depending on polygon count, animations, automated traffic etc.

Reaching 60fps with standard MBS layouts is what can be expected on your system. In my experience, MBS will not generate more fps than your monitor supports.

My (non-scientific ;)) conclusions:

  • Your computer works fine.
  • There are no hardware, thermal, driver or configuration issues which would negatively impact its performance.
  • MBS is working as expected.

MBS development is ongoing. I am confident that future releases will provide significant performance enhancements. Until then I would recommend the following steps which seem to have the most notable impact on MBS performance:

  • Reduce the number of polygons (i.e. remove complex models and especially large amounts of trees)
  • Temporarily disable automated traffic and animations
  • Turn off shadows in the graphic settings

Do this in stages and evaluate the respective impact in your individual situation.

I hope this helps answering your questions.

Cheers!
Alex

Thanks for the input and help.

Your conclusion seems accurate . I was surprised that my new computer wasn't more than 10 frames faster than my laptop type computer.

As you noted, MBS is ongoing and as we challenge its capability future releases may take more advantage of computer resources and provide improvements. Meanwhile, I'm enjoying its use while learning its capabilities.

Thanks a bunch

And why, oh why did you omit this single most important piece of information until now, if you don't mind me asking?

Please export your layout to a file and send it to me via email (see contact at the bottom of this page). The layout might be either too huge for MBS or there are some other problems, which I like to check.

Kind regards,

Neo

one of those post was :

Best Practices for Optimizing Large Layouts in 3D Train Studio?

I Must have thought because of that my conversation was a continuance of the subject.

In one post I read that it took a "Powerful" computer running windows 11 to achieve good FPS ... so when I purchased a new computer I was surprised that I only gained 6 to 10 frames p.s.. So I thought I was not configured correctly. Been searching for answers ....

As I stated in those post ... monitoring the activity of the CPU and GPU with 3D Studio running, only 10 to 15% of their capability is being used. So naturally configuration was suspected. That is why I stated to ask question ... and "assumed" (not justified) that the subject was around "Large Programs".

I still am surprised that 3D Studio is using so little of my graphics capability. And as @alexander42 stated

Just exported the file .... it is 7.24 MB ...
