I've published a new animated character as a Draft, to show how (relatively...) easy it is to create characters for MBS, animated or static, using MakeHuman and Blender. I can describe more fully the process for those interested; if I can do it, almost anyone can, with a bit of patience. No cost is involved; all the 'tools' used are free.
I used MakeHuman to create the character, exported as Fbx, to be uploaded to Mixamo, where I chose the animation. Downloaded the result as Fbx, to import into Blender. The Material files are too big, so I use them only to create a single multi-texture file suitable for MBS. The character can then be exported from Blender as Gtlf, for incorporation into MBS. This example character is now published as a Draft, with the ID :

Here's a badly-shot video of a model I've been working on, for a fellow Forum member. I don't know where the original is from; it's an interesting challenge, taking it to pieces to create the animations. Work in progress, really, as there's still a CP for an operator to be installed, and I don't know how to handle the hook. I can animate its rising and lowering, and probably allow it to pick up goods, but the height will be a variable, as the jib can extend so far. I'll work something out, though. It's just a 'for fun' exercise, but I learn a lot every time with these little projects. B|

These are very nice animations that you have given to the railroad crane. (y)
However, I still have a few comments about it:

The pivot around which the crane rotates on the carriage seems to me to be placed too far back.

1763749173_01FalscherDrehpunkt.thumb.jpg.bb6a4ddb66684a0c8ec9d27503f882aa.jpg

Especially with the turning movement in the video, I have the feeling that the crane is about to tip over.

1666018003_02Orginal-Drehpunkt.thumb.jpg.c6cae2e64e4a8cd0edef3b5dc64a8641.jpg

Almost at the very end of the video, you can briefly look directly at the rotating ladle, which is located here at the very back under the crane superstructure.

648311156_03VersetzterDrehpunkt.thumb.jpg.6c6920f3d3e33707920215251201b2b6.jpg

In this image, I have used retouching to move the rotating cup further forward, where I feel it should be.

1199925804_04AnderesBeispiel.thumb.jpg.bf5d0498797e2251881ab9e89069175d.jpg

This placement can also be seen quite clearly in the model by @SualokinK (filed in the online catalog under "Bahnfahrzeuge\Dienstfahrzeuge\Spezialfahrzeuge").

491916316_05SchrgerHaken.thumb.JPG.29a74831bc5938336d6b0d56d4a54816.JPG

I also noticed in the video that the hook sticks outwards when the crane arm is raised. It should actually always hang straight down in every inclination of the crane arm. You can achieve this in the animation by simultaneously applying the rotation of the crane arm in the opposite direction to the hook (with rope) and thus compensating for its "incorrect" inclination.

Doch jetzt genug des Meckerns. Insgesamt gefallen mir Deine Animationen sehr gut.
But now enough of complaining. Overall, I like your animations very much.

Thanks for the kind comments, and the critique; always welcome. That's how we improve. I have a couple of comments as replies, though...

I know little about rail cranes, and understand that this disposition may seem odd to more expert eyes. However, the centre point of rotation is, in this model, in the centre of the wagon; I think that's where it should be....

I can't find a photo of this specific crane, but here's a shot of another from the same company; we see a similar placing of the rotating platform...

20200630_133355.thumb.jpg.b30ce89d20a070f119c9b7f65081baae.jpg

Here's the 3D-printed parts for the crane above (no, as a model, not the real one, you fool 9_9 ..! ), where we see the disposition of the pivoting body, and the chassis...

828918932_2022-10-1019_00_07-NGaugeKirow1200UKCrane(SWHZXMQXK)byModern_Image_Models.jpg.26c7b3b5969d947a338fe2abe12e8294.jpg

I can't be certain, but I think that that's just how this design was built. Happy to learn otherwise, if anyone has more details of this crane (Kirow KRC 458...).

As for the hook : that's 'work in progress'. The problem is not the angle (that's an easy fix...), it's maintaining the angle for every inclination of the jib, and having it lower and rise with an animated wire rope. There are specific tools in Blender for this kind of animation, but my experiments so far have not revealed all the secrets of its implementation. Slightly complicated by having, in fact, two wire rope runs of four, so eight altogether. Once I manage one, I'm sure that eight will not pose problems, but first I must master one..!

As I wrote, this is all about learning; the result in a finished railway layout is really just a bonus for me. There's not many twin-oval village circuits that require such heavy lifting capacity..!

Was den Hook angeht: Das ist 'work in progress'.

Hi Doug,

If I'm not mistaken, it's the top section that doesn't sit right.

crane.jpg.34c41b8ce4acfa9802e676516f3dc885.jpg

It should have a center of rotation roughly where the green arrow is (to match your foto)
Not where yours is (red arrow)

You may want to pull the whole top section back some (or not. Just saying ...)

I've replied to this in the post above. I can't be sure without seeing something a bit more like technical drawings, but from what I have found on t'web, to check, it seems that this crane really is built that way. It's no great problem to change it if it's a problem for anyone, but the photo above, and the 'kit' version someone has done, seem to bear out the present disposition. I'll try to dig a bit deeper, to see if I can confirm or not this layout.
(Maybe I should have done another couple of running children instead..! :( )

I don't believe you have, Doug.

You talk about the pivot on the waggon. But I didn't dispute that it sits in the center of the waggon.

I suggested that the crane on top is lopsided towards the front.
When I check your model parts, they look like 2 goes onto 3 and 1 onto 2 as I point out here:

1284260735_crane2.jpg.57c84445478c76c7f45e40d220fa8fa2.jpg

And if that is correct, it puts the entire engine section behind the pivot point and only the cabin is in front.

Your engine appears to sit dead center upon the pivot.

But I don't mean to upset you and when you withdraw to "maybe one or two more children instead", I feel guilty for saying anything at all.

Cheers

Do you think I should make them retractable, then, or can we just put the tracks further apart..? :/

Hallo / hello  Douglas und / and Goetz,

It seems that there  exist 2 different crane models in real, which are both referred to on the internet as KRC 458 2S from Kirow.

On the first model with a long "rear end" behind the cab, the rotating pan actually sits in the front part of the crane superstructure, which causes the rear end to swing out to the other side when the crane is turned. I found a picture of this crane in a somewhat rotated state here. The construction here corresponds to the component drawing above, where Goetz has marked the positions of the pivot of the interlocking components with the red arrows.

But there is also the other design, where the pivot is actually located in the rear part of the superstructure. A corresponding picture can be found here, where with a little "goodwill" you can guess the pivot below the "engine room". This would then correspond to Douglas' animation. But to make sure that this really works and that the crane doesn't tip over, it has an extendable counterweight at the back, which you can see very well in this picture. This extendable counterweight would then have to be added to the Douglas model and extended before the crane goes into operation. Here is another schematic picture of the crane in operating mode.

The position of the slewing pan below the rear part of the crane superstructure and the associated extendable counterweight can be seen even better in these two pictures of a Kirow KRC 810 model crane.

Viele Grüße / many greetings

...I wonder whether you're aware that all your nice figures are represented only by huge question marks on my display. Is that due to your applications for taking them definitely into the catalogue?...

Good evening, Derrick...

I'm sorry, but I really will never understand how all this is supposed to work. I have carefully kept all of my published models in a specific folder in 'My 3D Models'. I had published each, as a Draft, and renewed at the beginning of each month. All from the same folder, so I know exactly what's published and what isn't (I've so many more models; this allows me to keep track...). A while back, I made the effort, as has been suggested many times, to present the models that Members are using, for inclusion in the Catalogue, and published each of them fully, with translated descriptions, variants, animation et al. I checked later, and each of the models had the mention 'Published, awaiting approval' or similar.
Now, when I look, none of my models are published, even in Draft state, and I don't know whether anything is wrong with them, or why they are no longer available to others. I am unwilling to start publishing again, even in Draft mode, if they are not fit for the Catalogue. This, in itself, doesn't bother me, as I still have use of all these models, and many more, but it's a great pity for those who have included them in their layouts. The lack of communication is, to me, a great disappointment.
I have a method, which would solve the problems for anyone wanting to continue with these models. I can make them all available outside of MBS, so that anyone can download them and create them for themselves in their own local catalogue. If there is no way of getting these models into the official Catalogue this could be a solution; I would rather they be included, or at least be informed that they are not suitable, and why.
My apologies; one day I will understand, but today is not that day. :(

Guten Abend Derrik...

Hi Douglas,

if the model editor has set the check mark for your model to green, you can upload your model as a draft at the same time as removing the "draft check mark" and asking Neo to approve it. Your model uploaded as a draft will still be available to everyone. Correctly you criticize lack of communication. A short sentence to explain the matter would soften some frustration. In today's fast-paced world, Neo is forced to keep up with our MBS. This inevitably leads to the fact that some things that the MBS to steer unintentionally fall behind. I myself am also affected by this.

Douglas, your models are perfect, someday they will be in the catalog!

Greetings Karl

Hi Douglas...

Thanks, Karl. I understand all of that, and that is what I did, so that the models could be approved (or not...). Now all is back as if I had done none of that. I could go back over all the models, re-write the description, in English and in German and present them again, without the 'Draft' check box, as I did last time. How many times does this have to be done..? If they are refused, that's not a problem to me (I would prefer to know why, but that's optional...), but I am now past 72, and the hours, days, weeks... left to me are quite precious. Doing things, I have no problem with. Doing things over and over with no result is not an option. I renewed them as Drafts for long enough to allow them to be reviewed, and they have been. Now they are either to go into the Catalogue, eventually, after I so publish them, or they have to be withdrawn. I cannot continue perpetually renewing, and I will not perpetually present them for approval. For those wishing to have them permanently in their layouts, I have already offered a solution, which I can do, once, and it will be done. Repeating the same gestures over and over, hoping for different results is one of the symptoms of madness; I count myself as sane. I'm sure others manage to do this without these tribulations, but I don't know what I'm doing differently. I have no criticism of @Neo, and have the greatest respect for the work that goes into this splendid software, but cannot pierce through this fog of my ignorance as to how to make it work for me (or rather, for those wishing to use my models...).
One day I will understand; today is not that day.

Danke Karl.

Hi Douglas,

I am sorry but there are some technical issues of your 3D models (I have only reviewed your humans). Even the lowest level of detail consists of several thousands of polygons, which is way to much for a single person (imagine a crowd of hundred or more people). The lowest level of detail of your animated tennis player does not match the size of the other levels.

Are you building the models by yourself or are you importing these models from external 3D sites? Please note that most models of external 3D collections are not suitable for realtime games like 3D Train Studio.

Kind regards,

Neo

OK, I'll retire the models from the On-line Catalogue, and keep them in my local 'My 3d Models'. Anyone wanting to include a model in their own layout can send me a PM; I shall return the .gtlf source model or 'mbe' model, which can then be imported into their own system. Hoping this resolves the issues for all.
